Greg Blair: The Underdog
Meet Greg Blair:
Words From Greg: Just being the underdog all my life, I actually came up when we were local superstars coming out of Schenley High. We were ranked in the country, going to all type of tournaments and going in & out of town while we were only in high school. But no one was ever talking about how good of a player I am. You know they were talking about the DJs (D.J. Kennedy-rising NBA/Overseas professional player), Dejuans (Dejuan Blair-Greg’s older brother and current Dallas Maverick player), Dre Kanes (Deandre Kane-Iowa State star point guard) (Laughs). And I had no problem with that because those are all my boys and I love when we all get exposure. But I always kept it in the back of my mind about how people said I couldn’t do certain things, or how I wasn’t that good and how I was only on teams because I’m athletic and because of my brother. That made me want to prove everyone wrong and honestly I still think about those things. I’ve been the underdog all my life, and that’s what pushed me. It all worked out for the best though! Coming from the Hill, from the projects, Whiteside Road projects, yeah man, growing up I seen a lot of crazy stuff happen as a young buck. Whether it was people getting killed, drugs being sold, or whatever. It just drove me to make it out. I never wanted to be like the dude selling dope or just out here killing people. That stuff is easy to do, not in a sense of doing it with ease, but it’s an easy way out to me. I just always told myself that I didn’t wanna be that. There’s more to life than just Pittsburgh and doing the same thing everyday and what’s inside the city. I think its sad that there are a lot of people who haven’t gotten a chance to experience what its like outside of the city. Just being able to get out and have fun in places like Los Angeles and Miami, I just thank God I’ve been able to do that. I just wish more people would chase their dreams and not cut themselves short. My advice to the youngin’s coming up is: Do you. Look where the people are who you look up to that sell dope. Look what type of life they live. Do you really wanna live that way? Duckin’ and dodgin’ literally all the time? It’s cool to grind and get it the legit way. Don’t let these girls influence you into having all this flashy stuff all the time. It’s cool! There’s gonna be the dope dealers that have more money than you, that are flyer than you right now, that got the rides and you don’t have a ride. But, if you go the legit way you will make it longer than them. Me personally, I understand that some people might have more than me now, but I know that those circumstances won’t last long. That legit money lasts way longer than that illegal money, man. I want all my young boys to know that it’s cool to go to school and stick to your own plan. I been listening to that Trula Gang, man. That’s my camp. I listen to and support a lot of other Pittsburgh music artists too though. Besides that it’s the norms: Jay-Z, Drake, of course the hometown homies - Wiz Khalifa & Chevy Woods – people like them. When I’m not training or doing anything regarding football, I like to do stuff the average dude does. Hit the club, the movies, kick it with a chick, just chill. You gotta know how to treat and reward yourself for your hard work. God first. God gives the toughest battles to the strongest soldiers. I really believe that. Overcoming adversity, persevering through whatever you get thrown at you; that’s just what it is. We get caught up in life sometimes, but we know what’s up. Bless up Greg Blair! - Zae Photo By Zack Labos Migos

Pittsburgh native and 2014 NFL prospect Greg Blair, talks self-motivation, putting on for the city, and being the underdog.
Fresh from an intense workout; the humble, stout, and visibly focused Greg Blair walked in to ‘Threads On Carson’ (a clothing boutique on the Southside of Pittsburgh), apologizing for showing up late. I told him it was no big deal, I’m working on getting the whole timing thing down-pat myself! We both agreed that no matter how much we think we control on our own, only God has the final say-so on the perfect timing. And it’s evident in the way that Greg has gotten to this point (a week away from being picked up by an NFL team), that timing throughout his football career has been more than unorthodox. After graduating from Schenley High school in Pittsburgh, PA, Greg chose football over basketball and went on to play JUCO ball at NC Tech for one year, and then Lackawanna (PA) for two more years. He signed to the University of Cincinnati in 2011, where he saw action in only one game his first season. Following that year, he had a breakout Junior season, leading the Big East in tackles with 103, also adding 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and not to mention garnering his team’s defensive MVP award. Greg opened the eyes of many across the country and plenty of NFL scouts. His Senior season didn’t look as productive statistically, but he made just as much as an impact based on the way offensives had to game-plan around him after finding out what a force he was the year before. He still finished with an above-average 77 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 3 pass deflections, and 1 sack. Many considered Greg the heart and soul of not only the Cincinnati defense, but also the whole team for that matter. After graduating this past winter from UC, he’s now ready to embark on a new chapter in his life and career.
